Zooly Interview

Over the past year, Zooly has become one of the hottest rising stars in the Trap/Twerk genre. His collaboration with Party Favor helped to put him on the map, but it’s his consistently impressive tracks that have allowed him to really standout. Just listen to ‘Bombs’ and ‘Dippin Down Compton’, two of the illest 100 bpm tracks to drop in the past 6 months. With the release of vibed out tracks like ‘Infatuation’ and ‘Psychedelic VIP’, plus a remix that does serious justice to Calvin Harris’ ‘Flashback’, Zooly has proven his abilities stretch beyond just making party bangers. Oh yeah, he’s also remixed the Goosebumps Theme, SNL’s iconic ‘More Cowbell’ skit, and built tracks off of iPhone and cat samples. Needless to say this is one producer you need to know. We had the pleasure of talking to Zooly about the motivation behind some of his work, what he’s feeling right now, his greatest successes and more. Check out the full interview below and get familiar.

FUXWITHIT: If people have never heard of you, what would you want them to know?
Zooly: I’d want them to know that I love pizza and that they should listen to my music while eating pizza ;]

FUXWITHIT: When you’re working on music is there anything you need have?
Zooly: To be honest, I usually have a Grande Iced Triple Shot White Mocha with soy so I don’t get the shitz later…

FUXWITHIT: You’ve put together some pretty fun, even comical tunes, ‘HOLYCOWBELL’, ‘Meow’, ‘Siri Says’. What’s the motivation behind these tracks? Are you just having fun?
Zooly: lol yeah there’s always motivation and silliness to these types of tunes. Will Ferrell is one of my favorite comedians and his skit on SNL inspired me to make ‘Holycowbell’. ‘Meow’ was inspired by my first cat Neon and ‘Siri Says’ was a funny idea me and my manager had going on at the time. I decided to twerk it out and it came out so amazing I had to put it out for my internet fwendz haha.

FUXWITHIT: What’s your favorite sample that you’ve included in a song? Are there any songs or sounds that you wouldn’t sample or remix?
Zooly: I like sampling old Dr. Dre vocals. Yeah there’s lots of songs I wouldn’t touch but there are a lot of jams out there that I really do want to remix.

FUXWITHIT: Can you elaborate on what songs you wouldn’t touch and why? Also name one track that you’re dying to remix.
Zooly: Well…older classic jams that I feel are great and probably shouldn’t be remixed by myself… Michael Jackson – ‘Remember The Time’ and Bob Marley – ‘Turn Your Lights Down Low’. Haha damn…I’m really feelin’ that Zeds Dead – ‘Lost You’.

FUXWITHIT: How did you connect with Party Favor for ‘Meow’?
Zooly: My good friend Brian linked us up. I sent Party Favor the rough idea of what I was going for and he was down. He’s an awesome dude, easy to work with and a sick producer which is why the collab came out so dope.

FUXWITHIT: Have you ever considered doing a VIP version? How would you change it? Maybe you could call it ‘Bark’ and riddle it with DMX samples.
Zooly: lol yeah I have considered a VIP but never gotten around to starting one. HAHA DMX is my dawg!

FUXWITHIT: Are there any trends in the industry that you are feeling right now?
Zooly: I’m really feelin’ a lot of the wavy/future trap and deep house stuff that’s been out lately. Working on some at the moment :D

FUXWITHIT: SoundCloud is continuing to crack down on accounts that have unofficial remixes or sampled material. What are your thoughts on this? How do you think this will this impact the industry?
Zooly: Well that sucks. I think a lot of dope tracks/artists will go unheard.

FUXWITHIT: What do you see as your greatest achievement to date?
Zooly: I really like how my ‘Flashback’ remix and ‘Gotdamn Gotdamn’ remix came out.

FUXWITHIT: What about those tracks stands out?
Zooly: I like how it moved and flowed while I was producing it. I knew how I wanted the track to be. I just went in, did it and it was exactly how I envisioned it. Some tracks take longer than others but when you know it’s flowing, it just stands right out from a producer’s point of view and from the love it’s gotten makes me feel like I connected with my fans and it’s a cool feeling.

FUXWITHIT: What is the best show that you’ve ever played and why?
Zooly: They’ve all been amazing but Orlando had so much energy <3

FUXWITHIT: Who are your favourite artists or producers at the moment?
Zooly: Damn really? Lol…only cause there’s so many! Stwo, Tchami, Chiefs, Troyboi, Yung Lean, Milo and Otis to name a few.

FUXWITHIT: What can we expect to hear from you for the remainder of the year?
Zooly: A little bit of everything I’m into at the moment. Gonna try some new stuff (mixed sub genres) if that makes sense. More bootlegs/remixes. Collaborations. Definitely some originals in the process and 30 minute to an hour mixes. So a lot is still coming this year and I’m very excited about that.

FUXWITHIT: Can you tell us who you’re working with on the upcoming collaborations?
Zooly: You’ll see soon enough ;]

FUXWITHIT: Any final words?
Zooly: Yes, shouts to all that’s been supporting me, you guys never go unnoticed or unappreciated, I love ya’ll!
