Earlier this week J. Cole celebrated the 5 year anniversary of his classic mixtape The Warm Up. Keeping that in mind we decided that it’s only right for this week’s Throwback Thursday to be a track from Cole from around the same time. After much thought we decided to go with ‘Good Game’. The track dropped prior to The Warm Up and helped to build anticipation for the tape (“look out for, for that Warm Up!“) Produced by J. Cole the beat features some upbeat keys and heavily samples N.W.A’s classic ‘Express Yourself’. “…this my beat, look how I get on that shit/I’m on it like I own it cus I sewn it/Needle and thread, hip-hop heads know them drums express yourself”.
The first verse showcases J.Cole’s hunger while at the same time sees him stunting on the doubters. “Won’t lose, bet on that! or be in debt forever/ Plus whatever Jigga say, I’m hot/That’s like the pot called kettle black/ Now these industry niggas like damn, “Jay said all that?”/ Same niggas could’ve signed me, now they gon regret all that.” The second verse takes a different direction painting pictures of the struggles, hardships and perils experienced in his hometown of Fayetteville, NC. Enjoy the track and go bump The Warm Up since it never gets old.
