“This is anti Auto-Tune, death of the ringtone/This ain’t for iTunes, this ain’t for sing alongs”. When Jay Z dropped “D.O.A.” in 2009 it made some serious waves. Having the biggest figure in the game denounce one of the most popular trends is sure to turn heads. As a huge hater of Auto-Tune, I was ecstatic with the release, but felt the production could have been harder to match the lyrics. Not long after my wishes were granted when British Bass duo Chase and Status remixed the track. The remix starts out with Jay Z’s short vocal intro over a synth , moving into a quick drum build before dropping into the mind rattling bass lines that make this sound so raw. The beat shuffles between siren-filed builds and bass heavy kicks that punctuate Jay Z’s verses perfectly. I’m a huge fan of No I.D. but I’ve always found this version to be far superior to the original. The rework makes it truly feel like “This is practically assault with a deadly weapon”. On top of all this, it has proven to be well ahead of it’s time. After nearly 5 years it still sounds fresh enough to drop in any bass set (Trap/Dubstep/etc.). I think this remix deserves a “moment of silence” for how hard the British duo killed it.
