Keys N Krates latest release Every Nite demonstrates why the Toronto trio are becoming the masters of weird rap beats. The 6 song EP is strong from start to finish with just enough diversity to keep things interesting while remaining cohesive. ‘Understand Why’ opens the project with incredibly infectious vocal loops, energetic snare rolls and killer keys. Much like their previous release ‘Treat Me Right’ this one will be stuck in your head all day, off of one listen. ‘Hypnotik’ sounds exactly how you would expect from the title, but also like nothing you’ve ever heard. The track comes out swinging with a short intro that morphs into intense deep bass hits with a layer of exotic samples. It continues to evolve as time goes on with the group bringing in a wide variety of samples to mix up the vibe. When they finally bring in the ‘Hypnotik’ vocal things really get crazy. This is the track to play at the party or turn the festival up a notch.
The project moves into two interconnected tracks ‘Are We Faded’ and ‘Yes We Faded’. The former is upbeat and enjoyable for any occasion. The latter contains layered vocals, gritty snare rolls, and a ton of turnt up samples. It’s a banger to blast in your whip on that late night tip. Nearing the conclusion, ‘Your Love’ will pull at your heart strings with pitched vocals, and emotive synths taking center stage. With Kendrick Lamar sampled midway through the song takes on a more zoned out vibe. Closing things out is ‘She’s So High’ a glitchy tune that contains sirens and steady drum patterns. The sound is something I’d expect from Kill Paris rather than Key N Krates but it impresses none the less. All-in-all Every Nite delivers on a number of levels. Whether you’re looking for something hard hitting, trippy, catchy or stirring Key N Krates has got you. You can stream and purchase the EP below.
