Australia has become a hotbed for up-and-coming producers and DJs alike. The Future Bass genre is dominated by Australians who exude rays of sunlight and fresh ocean air through their recordings. One of the greatest examples is Perth based artist Sable. In just over a year he has released an abundance of impressive tunes that range from cheery synth soaked feels to gritty dungeon bass. Currently in the midst of his country wide Kanto tour we had the pleasure of connecting with him. We discussed a wide range of topics from making blood sacrifices to the bass gods, to his pokemon obsession and much more. Check out the full interview below.
FUXWITHIT: If fans haven’t met you before what would you want them to know about you?
Sable: I’m just another guy pretty much. Come up and talk to me :3
FUXWITHIT: How long have you been producing? Did you grow up playing any instruments?
Sable: I’ve been recording music for about 8 years and electronic music specifically for about 4. I play guitar, bass, drums kinda badly and have for a long time.
“I make a blood sacrifice to the god of bass and meditate for an hour in prayer waiting for enlightenment”
FUXWITHIT: What is your process like when you are in the studio?
Sable: I make a blood sacrifice to the god of bass and meditate for an hour in prayer waiting for enlightenment. Then I’ll open up Ableton and try and make something I’m vibing on.
FUXWITHIT: Your latest EP Kanto utilized the vocaloid machine on both songs. Did Porter Robinson’s use of the technology on Worlds influence your decision to work with it?
Sable: Not really. I’ve been into vocaloid for a while (kagamine & miku <3 <3) and, if anything, Cosmo’s Midnight made me aware of the English vocaloid Avanna which then led me to properly listen to Porter Robinson’s ‘Sad Machine’.
FUXWITHIT: You have become well known for making cheery and upbeat music but you’ve also made some darker tracks like ‘Master Key’, ‘Mt. Moon’ and even ‘Surf’. Did you make a conscious decision to create something harder or did it just came about naturally?
Sable: I think I make more of that than anything, it’s just none gets released. I make at least 3x more music than I ever get to release. On the topic of the tone of the music, I don’t really actively set out to make any particular sound. A lot of it comes from what I will resonate with at the time or what area of my set needs filling out.
FUXWITHIT: You recently connected with Promnite when he was out in Australia. Was it the first time you’ve met? Can we expect some music coming from the two of you?
Sable: PJ :3 Yeah it was. We chatted a bit on tweeter but that was the first time in person. We’re throwing some ideas around so there might be something real soon.
FUXWITHIT: You’ve said that you have a Pokemon obsession. How did this come about? How much influence has it had on your music?
Sable: Obsession might be a little far hahaha. It’s just a concept I really like and always will. It definitely had a big influence on this release and tour. I wanted to capture some of the feelings of different aspects of the series/games and the sets I’m playing are meant to be a constantly changing landscape of dance music textures and feels so it’s like the games as much as possible. I’ll even jump down and challenge people to battle me on the floor (this doesn’t happen but maybe it should ¯_(ツ)_/¯)
FUXWITHIT: I’ve heard you’re also an avid rock climber. What’s your most impressive climb to date?
Sable: I do love climbing! I spend most of my time indoors and am just working at V5/V6 problems when I’ve got the time. ‘Avid’ doesn’t necessarily mean ‘good’ haha.
FUXWITHIT: You had quite a few comments about the U2 album that was forced onto iPhones. What are your thoughts on the evolution of music distribution?
Sable: I definitely thought it was a misplaced gesture. The removal of choice from the equation was definitely a bad move. I have nothing against U2 but it definitely made them relevant again so maybe part of an advertising master plan? I didn’t realise I was that vocal about it!
FUXWITHIT: How did you connect with Pilerats? How has working with the label changed your career?
Sable: Pilerats connected with me after circo last year. It’s definitely a good relationship. Music is a team sport, and a difficult one at that, and having a good team has made it significantly more enjoyable/possible.
“…making it rain Sable cards with LDRU and Cosmo’s Midnight. That was a great night.”
FUXWITHIT: You’re currently in the midst of the Kanto tour. How has it been so far? What’s the craziest or coolest experience you’ve had?
Sable: I ate a chicken heart in Townsville with the amazing crew up there. That was kinda weird haha. I think the fake Sableye card from a Sydney fan definitely tops it + making it rain Sable cards with LDRU and Cosmo’s Midnight. That was a great night.
FUXWITHIT: Do you have any plans for a North American tour? We’d love to see you in Canada.
Sable: I’d love to come to Canada! Really really want to. I think a US tour is definitely on the cards for next year but nothing locked in yet so just crossing my fingers that someone wants me to come :3
FUXWITHIT: How do you compare djing to producing? Do you have a preference toward either?
Sable: I only really just started DJing again after a huge break. I like it but it’s definitely something you have to invest time and effort in to be good at. I chose to invest all my time into being the best producer I can possibly be. It’s definitely a great thing to see a great DJ but it’s also a very different game to making music.
FUXWITHIT: What are you most looking forward to for 2015?
Sable: It goes a little something like ‘hey u, I think ur cute’ and will hopefully be out early in the year. It’s making me very excited to release.
FUXWITHIT: Any last words?
Sable: Love u all <3 <3
