#tbt – Tracks You May Have Missed – Drake – Come Winter

by Colin

“Yeah, this dedicated to Canada man, the whole up North. A lot of people don’t realize how cold it gets during the Winter.”

I couldn’t think of a track more fitting, as I’m writing this while riding the bus in a snowstorm. The cut comes off of Drake’s debut mixtape Room For Improvement. This is when Drake was still working to refine his style and sound. The production matches the theme perfectly with a cold and soulfoul beat. ‘Come Winter’ is an early glimpse at drizzy’s story telling skills as he paints pictures of the tell tale signs of winter up north “Is what happens after the season where the leaves just scatter, where the Timb’ laces get tighter and parka hoods flip up.” The second verse sees Drake reminiscing on a female who’s motives may not be entirely pure. The track contains several punchlines around Canada, “And now, I’m proud to have her like Montreal to the frizzench, she love to play hurt like Carter did on the bizzench.” Unfortunately the Winter love story doesn’t end well for Drake (“she had me convinced that she could’ve been a dime, I guess, I lost another one to the wintertime”), but he’s not mad at it. The beat flips to a more upbeat sound with the sample “strolling in the park watching winter to turn to spring”. The final verse has a more optimistic feel while Drake raps about club hoppin’ and connecting with new ladies. It’s an early insight into his lover attitude and ends on a cheery note, “Yet you find peace with yourself, now least there’s some room to ride, there’s also Room For Improvement as soon as June arrive.” Bump this through the cold days and take solace in knowing that winter will eventually turn to Spring.
