Perth based producer Palace has been on our radar for sometime. An easy selection for our Australian Producers You Need To Know feature, Palace first caught our ear with his stunning blend of future bass and jersey club. After putting in considerable time refining his sound, he just unleashed the massive new single ‘Too Young’. Keeping the momentum going, just two weeks later he gifted fans with a gripping future RnB rework of Vanessa Elisha’s ‘Down For This’. With an EP coming out on etcetc music and his buzz the biggest it’s ever been, what better time than to connect for an exclusive guest mix and interview. The mix packs an eclectic range of sounds with everything from Goldlink and Action Bronson to Slumberjack and Flume over to Baauer and Mura Masa. Not to mention remixes and originals from Palace including his unreleased ‘On Fire’ rework for Carmada. Listen to the mix below and be sure to snag the free download for future listens.
FUXWITHIT: What can we expect from your mix?
Palace: Good tunes, sorry I forgot 128bpm was the magic number.
FUXWITHIT: What drives you to make music?
Palace: I wouldn’t say there is one driving factor, but at the end of the day I am a music lover and want to be making music I would listen to and enjoy.
FUXWITHIT: What’s the current musical landscape like in Australia?
Palace: I think its great, there are a lot of really talented artists over here. That said it is definitely under threat of going stale.
FUXWITHIT: Your early works are very upbeat and cheery while some of your more recent tracks have taken on a darker tone. What influences your sound?
Palace: I’ve always been into ‘darker’ tones. Justice were a huge influence in me starting to produce music and as I improve my craft I’m working towards writing music with more depth.
FUXWITHIT: What has it been like working with the etcetc music team? Was it difficult to adjust to working with a label?
Palace: They’re great. Everyone at the label is super supportive and really pumping me up for the upcoming releases.
FUXWITHIT: On ‘What You Want’ you built the track almost entirely out of samples you recorded. Have you been recording a lot of your own samples lately?
Palace: Yeah, I take a Zoom mic everywhere I go these days. I recorded some great street drummers the other day. Also have a pretty nice microphone at home that I record a bunch of weird stuff I find around the house.
FUXWITHIT: I noticed the track is no longer on your SoundCloud. Why was it removed?
Palace: I might put it out just in a file of scrap tunes soon, it just wasn’t really me. I do like the song though!
FUXWITHIT: Where do you hope music takes you?
Palace: To the six. Would love to run thru it with my woes.
