A house in the hills, bottles in the club, booty on a yacht – if you want it, you just gotta ask.
That’s what the Pennsylvania native comedian-cum-rapper Lil Dicky proves in his video for the appropriately titled track “$ave Dat Money” (featuring Fetty Wap and Rich Homie Quan) off his 2015 release Professional Rapper.
At a time when rappers are constantly calling each other out to put their money where their mouths are, Lil’ Dicky does just that – except that he has none, if we’re to believe his lyrics. Subject matter here includes the woes of bill splitting, declining credit cards, and just how tough it is to get someone to lend you a yacht or a cameo (see if you can spot T-Pain, Mark Cuban, Dillon Francis, and Tom Petty).
Those familiar with Lil’ D will recognize the cheeky and elaborate punchlines and legitimate flow that are put to use in underhandedly flipping the bird at rap game’s biggest tropes like irresponsible spending, misogyny, and lavish nightlife. Some might argue an irresponsible use of outsider white-boy status, but the end result is a relatable, intelligent, and subversive video that is the antithesis to rap – one that will crack you up and at the same time wonder if your own dreams really aren’t a knock-on-the-door away after all.
And for all the hype, Lil’ Dicky’s not the first white rapper to talk about being broke; California Caucasian Watsky (yes, of fast-rapping Ellen fame) talked about being B.R.O.K.E in this video off his 2013 release, Cardboard Castles:
Do you know of any other broke-ass white-boy rappers?
