One of the year’s most inventive musical minds, Woolymammoth, has finally unleashed his debut EP. Tricks fuses hard hitting bass with experimental sound design, transporting listeners into a dimension of darkness. The opening vocals of ‘butane’ are encouraging (“don’t be scared”) but the hopeful optimism is obliterated by a buzz saw warning that’s coupled with ample low end bass. ‘goom’ builds anxiety through a slow burning lead-in that intensifies slowly, dragging listeners deeper into the shadows. By the time you get to ‘tricks’ there’s no turning back. Rap vocals are layered, chopped and distorted while mind bending synths fight against deep bass vibrations. ‘Juice’ is a west coast party anthem that is trapped inside an abandoned insane asylum. Closing things out comes ‘Best In It,’ a braggadocios battle anthem that lets listeners know exactly where Woolymammoth is at. It’s brooding, in your face and insanely viscous. Tricks cements Woolymammoth’s status as one of the most forward-thinking producers in bass music. It’s horrifying, enthralling and astounding. Get lost in depths of Tricks below. You can also snag the EP on iTunes.
