The 6ix is on fire! In the past few years Toronto has gone from “Canada’s New York” to a global phenomenon with a strong individual identity and sound. The stream of talent isn’t going to slow up anytime soon and today we’re showcasing one of the city’s up-and-coming stars, Internet Daughter. First landing on our radar with her now removed collab ‘Runnin’ with Noahplause, she’s continued to impress with a stream of releases, most notably ‘Damn Girl’ and ‘Yo (I’m Lit)’. With support from TroyBoi, UZ, Slander and more, she’s been building some major momentum. We had the pleasure of connecting with her to discuss her current place as an artist, first tour, her love for Toronto and more. She also laced us with a killer mix that blends ignorant, sexy and hard-hitting. Stream the mix below and be sure to grab the free download. Interview and tracklist below.
How did you get into music production and DJing?
An ex taught me how to DJ, another one showed me how to use Logic then I just went from there. I won’t give you the classic ‘well I played piano as a kid and then I got a cracked copy of FL studio’ producer story. I was always involved in music but one day just got tired of being a bystander and realized I wanted to do the electronic stuff too.
Can you elaborate on how the internet birthed/raised you?
Haha it was actually from when I started using Twitter a lot. It’s not really even a good story but the name stuck and I used it for all my socials so when I started to DJ I felt like it was a good moniker. I think most people are pretty obsessed with the internet for obvious reasons, it’s really given artists a platform to get their stuff out there in a way that used to not be possible.
I’m still exploring what my ‘sound’ is for lack of a better term.
Where would you say you are in your (artist) life?
I’d say adolescence, I’m still exploring what my ‘sound’ is for lack of a better term. My stuff isn’t all over the place per se but my songs are all pretty different I feel.
You recently said you want to make shit people care about, not face melting drops. How are you going about that?
If I’m being honest I was drunk when I tweeted that but I still mean it haha. I just don’t want to do what so many people do right now which is, excel at engineering and make carbon copies of popular songs/genres to fast track themselves to 100k plays with a fan gated download. There’s no longevity in that. I want to work with more rappers and singers too. Song writing over obscene sound design basically.
Can you tell us a little bit about Bedroomer? How did you become part of the collective? What makes Bedroomer unique?
Bedroomer is a mixed media collective with an ever evolving roster of producers, singers, rappers and artists. I wasn’t even dj’ing when I first met Eytan and Liam so we just started off as friends. Once I began to DJ/produce it sort of just happened. What’s cool about Bedroomer is nobody really cares about genre plus it’s also not JUST music, Jenn and Mackenzie do a lot of cool visual art for example, they do events, everything.
You just wrapped up your first tour. How was it? What was your favourite city to play in?
Yeah it was really fun but it was also super tiring, I wasn’t prepared for that aspect. There’s a lot of things you don’t realize about playing out of town until you finally do it. Hmm….it was all fun for different reasons….but I really loved St John’s, as cheesy as it may sound the people were super friendly, club was packed and shout out Adam Harding @ Yung Dumb for being an ill promoter.
I love this city. The best part is….everything?
What’s the best part about living in Toronto?
I love this city. The best part is….everything? It’s really come into its own in the last 5 years. The food is great, the parties are fun, all my friends are here. I think the music scene has gotten increasingly interesting with the number of smaller parties being put on. I’ve been to many other cities and I still prefer Toronto.
Can you tell us about a few local producers you’ve been digging lately?
Well….obviously my Bedroomer fam, Eytan Tobin just dropped an EP called ‘1990’ and Hudson Alexander just put out some cool hip hop stuff with Atari Jones. I’ve been listening to more hip hop lately…Jazz Cartier’s producer Lantz is dope.
Yeah it’s honestly pretty ridiculous that I have to deal with men trying to discredit my accomplishments because I’m a woman…
You’ve been vocal about facing sexism as of late. Does it surprise you that you’re still dealing with this in 2016? What do you think could be done to eliminate this way of thinking?
Yeah it’s honestly pretty ridiculous that I have to deal with men trying to discredit my accomplishments because I’m a woman but it seems to be mostly salty bro producers who aren’t getting the love they feel they deserve from the scene. Men don’t like to see women in what they feel is their spot. It’s not surprising, sexism is deeply ingrained in our culture so it’s not a simple thing to fix. I still get paranoid that people assume guys help me with my music or make it for me which sucks because I’m sure 0 guys feel that way. Oh it’s going to take a lot of work, it’s going to require a big cultural shift not just one in music. Guys need to get over not wanting to be surpassed by a woman though….seriously…
What can we expect from the mix?
It’s a lot of hip hop/trap with a few songs more on the EDM side. It’s pretty much what I would normally put into a set but heavier on the hip hop.
What’s next on the horizon for Internet Daughter?
Well I’m going to be supporting What So Not in June on a bunch of dates, doing a dope free event with Falcons and Promnite in Toronto and playing my first festival in July….got a bunch of cool shows lined up. Musically, going to be dropping a track on Bedroomer with Chippy Nonstop in a few weeks and working on my first full EP as well.
