Formerly a duo, What So Not has continued to thrive and impress under the reigns of Emoh Instead. While some may have predicted Flume’s departure to negatively impact the sound, What So Not has remained as strong as ever. Divide & Conquer is true testament to this. The project builds on the ambitious foundation of the WSN brand. It’s what we’ve come to expect and hope for, but still illustrates the evolution musically. Well known for the emotional meets hard-hitting sound Divide & Conquer leans harder on the former making the latter that much more impactful when it’s there. The title track opens things up with an anxious feel, crazy progression and some hypnotizing sounds. It tells you from the jump, “this is going to be a ride”. From there the ride deepens and drifts. ‘Severence’ is a poignant interlude that prepares you for the gripping ‘Lone’. It’s classic WSN blending deep feels with strong drops. ‘Buried’ is an ethereal dreamlike effort with George Maple and Rome Fortune; a seemingly odd pairing that fits together perfectly. ‘Montreal’ packs a tribal trap influence with stunning vocals from Kimbre. As things wind down, ‘Trust’ gives us the future bass feel that Australia has become synonyms with. ‘Adieu’ is a short but powerful close. It’s hauntingly beautiful; equipped with wonky bass, unsettling synths and bent vocals. Stream the EP below and grab it on iTunes.
