Baauer and CZ ‘s ‘How Can You Tell When It’s Done?’ begins with a disgusting beat crafted out of an airplane doing a nose dive over and over, and someone desperately slamming on their breaks; at least, that’s what it sounds like.
Baauer’s enthralling mechanical metallic style surfaces to balance out CZ’s phrenetic sound, which is allowed to undulate between slinky dream-sequences and hyperdrive. This is what a drone listens to after a hard day at the office pushing cold buttons, and needs to get back in touch with a more primitive-chill automation. Sharp vocals punch out against the deep bass, all while ducking the swinging-blade synth. There are partitions in the stormy clouds, where angelic breathiness surfaces in breaks from the nethermost. The transitions aren’t spasmodic but jolting, in a good tingly way.
The double nature of this collaboration delivers a jam for every kind of Dance/EDM fan who is also a supernatural-machine-demon. Press play, already.
