There’s nothing better than coming across a release that absolutely blows your mind. Finding an individual track that amazes is incredible enough, but a five track EP is something else. Enter Ivy Lab’s new release Peninsula. For those unfamiliar, Ivy Lab is the brainchild of London producers Sabre, Stray and Halogenix. Peninsula doesn’t just pull in listeners, it transports them into another dimension.
The title track feels like a distant alien race attempting to make contact with earth. The glitchiness is fine-tuned into muffled shouts and clear as day tribal chants. The result is a track that’s part futuristic and part ancient. ‘Magikess’ is a lesson in the dark arts. It feels like wondering through an abandon hospital on mescaline. ‘Thirsty’ switches the vibe, leveraging 90’s R&B samples, Rick Ross grunts and cavernous bass for a sound best described as space trap. ‘Eyes Down’ enters the realm of trip-hop with hazy loops and dirty distorted bass. Closing the project comes ‘Forex VIP’ a Pete Rock sampling skull-splitter that takes an already incredible EP to another galaxy.
If you love weird bass music, this may be the best EP you’ll hear all year. Stream Peninsula below.
