Earlier this week MST. slid into my DMs with a promise of weird and experimental music. Generally unsolicited Twitter submissions are quite lackluster but MST. proved to be an exception. His new EP See You Space Cowboy… is an anime inspired adventure built off his personal favourite series Cowboy Bebop. Whether you’re a fan of the show or not, you’re sure to be impressed. ‘Tiger Striped Cat’ opens things up with jazzy horns, sunset-inspired guitar riffs and some DJ Shadow-Esq drum loops. The vocal sample provides an interesting narrative dimension that caries throughout the project. ‘The Meaning of Nothing’ follows with a feeling of uncertainty. A voice asks “did you say your prayers?” before dropping you into the depths of hell. Distorted dark bass and icy keys combine for a deathly feel. Things take a brighter turn as we progress into ‘I Love ED.’ Heavenly strings are plucked and melded with distorted vocal bends and bouncy drums. The brighter sound decays with time, dropping into a darker latter half. The project concludes with ‘Bang,’ a slow burning cinematic piece that gets grimy. The combination of theatrical styles and forward thinking bass make See You Space Cowboy… a serious standout.
