Brooklyn’s own Brasstracks are easily one the year’s biggest standout acts; from SoundCloud darlings to Grammy Award winning Chance The Rapper collaborators. Despite their success, the duo has managed to stay true to their art. They’ve proceeded to evolve while maintaining the signature sound that we all fell in love with. For Those Who Know Part 1 perfectly encapsulates my previous statement. ‘Improv #1 (Intro),’ opens things as powerfully as possible. Despite its nonchalant title, the track is perfectly polished. With features from The Underachievers & Robert Glasper, the song blends rap with jazzy overtones so exceptionally, it’s impossible to not draw parallels to the sounds of The Roots. The follow-up pairs Brasstracks with BXRBER for a soulful R&B ode to NYC. The title track further demonstrates the breadth of their musical abilities with Brasstracks’ own Ivan Jackson taking on the vocal duties. ‘When You Say That’ takes it back to the instrumental tip. It’s an upbeat jazzy number that’ll leave you feeling enchanted. On ‘Opposite Ways’ they bring in familiar voices in Fatherdude and S’natra. It’s an emotional tune that explores two different tales of drifting apart. The project vibes out on ‘Improv #1 (Outro),’ a perfect wind down to a stellar EP. Brasstracks are carving out their own lane in the industry and this may be their sharpest effort to date.
