I was busy putting together one of my top-of-the-year playlists, foolishly thinking that 2017 has already given its best musically, when a wild Rohaan appeared in my feed reminding me that its golden period hasn’t concluded yet. With more than a dozen releases behind him in the last 12 months, we can say this year has consecrated the UK producer as one of the most talented artists in the web community. With a very Holly-like attitude, his solo productions and collaborations have ranged from melodic ballads to vertebreaker bangers, making me dance, cry and mosh like an animal.
Talking about heavy stuff, I was sure ‘First of Many’ (with laxcity) would’ve been the peak of Rohaan’s evil side but hell no, this latest self-release totally outclasses any previous one. ‘Mimikats’, in combo with Roxas, is a black hole, a vortex that adsorbs everything and gives back nothing but filthy, abrasive, disturbing, inhuman sounds. Built around a sakuraburst bass sample, despite the slow halftime drum & bass rhythm, the composition is perfectly designed to keep its powerful anger intact without becoming boring or pointless noise.
