Thook – Guest Mix + Interview

by Colin

After a year long hiatus, I’m beyond excited to announce that our Guest Mix series is back! That’s right. We’re back to bringing you exclusive mixes from some of the hottest artists in the game. To kick things off you know we had to land someone special. We hand-picked our favourite up-and-coming producer from our home city of Toronto: Thook. If you’re unfamiliar with the incredible beatmaker that ends today. In the past two years Thook has created some of the most unique and exciting bass music released. With tracks like ‘forest,’ ‘menace to society’ and ‘8 Zone’ under his belt, it’s only a matter of time before Thook blows up.

He came through with an absolutely monstrous mix for us featuring heavy hitters like TroyBoi, Baauer, Stooki Sound, G Jones and more. What’s most impressive in the mix is the grip of his own originals, edits and IDs, including the massive unreleased collab that caps the mix off.

You can stream the full mix below and be sure to grab the free download. Check out our interview and tracklist also below.

Where does your name come from and what does it mean?

It comes from a cool story I read about these beings that had the dopest characteristic. They could be right in front of you and everything would be normal, but the moment you turned around, you’d completely forget the whole interaction. When you saw them again it’s like you’re picking up where you left off. I love ideas like that. Could make for a badass sci-fi.

Your music seems to draw inspiration from nature (‘seaside,’ ‘forest’). What’s your relationship like with nature? Does it influence/inspire your music?

Of course. Not just nature in all it’s basic forms. Ambience like the beginning of ‘Mehdi’. I can’t think of a better way to infuse a place into a song. I’ve always liked that shit. My next EP is actually closely connected with nature and how polarizing it is.

What’s your main goal as a musician?

Carving my sound into the world.

Your music has some crazy sounds and samples. How do you find your samples? How do they play into your creative process?

We live in the internet age. If you’re good at Google, you have an advantage. I just hunt sounds that I remember as a kid, like cartoons and things like old orchestra hits. I also haven’t traveled much so I imagine how much crazy sounds there are out there. If I can’t travel to the middle east to record these sounds, I can find them online from people who can, until I can.

No mind is the same, so why is there so much of the same sounding music out there?

One of the things that makes your music so special is that it’s so different. How do you continue to create music that’s so unique?

Not to sound pretentious, but I haven’t heard music like mine. I think that’s the point of it all. No mind is the same, so why is there so much of the same sounding music out there? It’s okay to gravitate to a specific sound or genre, and make your version of it. But if you combine that with the same sounds, samples, presets, plugins, arrangements, name, and cover art, you’re gonna get very similar garbage. People are also afraid to be ridiculed for being or sounding different. Music will never evolve if you live like that. I also started off producing by analyzing songs, but really straying away from jacking people’s style. Straight up, I’ve made melodies and shit, and like 80% into the song I’m like oh wait, this melody is from this song or whatever. I scrap it so I can make something more original.

I’m just a impatient person. I can’t fathom making a fire album, and having my label put it in a pipeline a year from now.

The bulk of your music has been self released. Do you have any desire to work with labels?

Definitely. I’m just a impatient person. I can’t fathom making a fire album, and having my label put it in a pipeline a year from now. Obviously the advantage of getting it on a label has its perks. But there’s something to be said about self releasing. I respect any artist who can drop a song out of the blue on SoundCloud and get crazy coverage. If you build like that, you’re almost cutting out the label itself. s/o Medasin.

You’re pretty quiet on social media. Is this done intentionally or are you just not really a fan of it?

I’m just music oriented. Even before I got into producing I was never heavy into social. I’ll use it if I need to reach my people. That being said, I get messages on all the platforms from fans and people who want feedback, or just questions. Hit me up if you want to talk about music or want some critique on things.

Can you tell us a little bit about Make Your Mark?

MYM is a collective that me and a couple close friends all started. The name is self explanatory. My guys are crazy. Lingo and his brother Nate, these dudes I’ve known for a long time and making a collective to capture the essence of it all was just a way to bring it to people’s ears.

Most people tend to see you as producer more so than a DJ. Do you have plans/desires to play more shows?

Definitely. I’m a producer first, but the DJing is just the live side of it. This mix is a taste of how I get down.

I have some dust with Lingo that will melt your shoes.

What can we expect from Thook for the remainder of 2018?

An EP very soon. Hopefully through a label. Shows. Local. Collabs. I can tell you for sure, I have some dust with Lingo that will melt your shoes. I have a collab with him and Dom Dias as well, also apart of MYM that’s going to be nuts. Just more presence.
