New Zealand’s Ian Munro has been a favourite of ours since the release of his debut EP Stay Lit. The hard-hitting trap effort showcased his talent as producer as well as Quality Goods Records early knack for spotting talent. In the year and a half since its release, Ian Munro has consistently dropped banger-after-banger. From ‘Purple Ford Falcon,’ to ‘Lost In You,’ to his massive official remix of UZ’s ‘Bad Gurlz.’ While these tracks have done wonders for his career, Ian began looking to expand his sound and try something different. His latest release ‘Yours’ is the first taste of this, “I found myself in a bit of a pit in 2017 and was becoming more and more dissatisfied by a lot of what I was hearing. Everything felt sort of soul-less. ‘Yours’ is still very much my sound — however, I feel it’s a lot more refined and personal. It’s the type of emotionally and melodically charged music I’ve wanted to write for a long time, and it’s a step I’m happy to be taking.”
Deep basslines underscore the distorted and non-human vocals in ‘Yours.’ It’s a nearly spiritual sound that’s uplifted as the vocals become pitched up over a powerful build. The drops illustrate the dichotomy in the work, pairing a moving and hopeful energy with some sinister wubs. There’s also an uncertain fragility that’s calmed by the hypnotic spirit laced throughout. ‘Yours’ packs ample feels and just enough of that raw energy to appease old fans and pull in many new ones. Stream ‘Yours’ below and grab the free download (it’s yours anytime before the 16th).
When asked what we can expect from Ian for the remainder of the year he gives us a lot to be excited about, “Expect a lot more from me this year. I’ve got an EP coming out on Quality Goods Records and a lot of single releases lined up ;-)” If you’re hitting SXSW this year be sure to catch Ian Munro at Space Yacht QUIX takeover, Ethics Music Lounge, Austin on March 15th & NAKID HOUSE, Austin March 16th.
