Oski On Writing A ‘Killa’ Sound, Australia, Quality Goods Recs + More [Interview]

by Curt Norris

We have loved the futuristic sounds of bass/trap producer Oski for some time now, and he always brings a refreshing approach to each new release. Having first burst on the scene some three years ago with collaborations with fellow producer Hydraulix, he dropped a slew of fiery bootlegs that built a crazy amount of hype, before coming to release on labels including Disciple, Good Enuff and Circus. Most recently he has been working closely with UZs  label Quality Goods Records, where he has released two incredible EPs.

His latest single ‘Killa,’ is a testament to his immense, raw talent and it lands just as Oski is out on a tour of Australia and New Zealand. We wanted to speak to the Aussie about makes him tick when making music, and how he sees his career progressing. Check out the full interview below.

Probably one of my favourite moments was in Mackay when the promoter brought out a piñata on stage while I was playing and cracked it into the crowd.

How has the tour been going so far? Favourite moment?

It’s been going super well! Probably one of my favourite moments was in Mackay when the promoter brought out a piñata on stage while I was playing and cracked it into the crowd.

Where are you most looking forward to playing?

I actually played an awesome festival yesterday called Rabbits Eat Lettuce. I was really looking forward to that and the show was so great.

What was the inspiration behind ‘Killa’? Do you tend to have specific themes when you start creating a tune?

There was no inspiration, I just kinda started writing something that sounded cool to me, I guess. The snare is a rimshot mixed with an over-compressed/over-distorted/pitched up 909 Tom sample and that was the main basis for the beat.

How did you connect with Quality Goods Records?

They found me before Quality Goods even existed. UZ and me worked on a collab called ‘Chainsaw’ a few years back and him and I developed an awesome friendship.

His manager and label manager Mouna is probably one of the strongest and fiercest women I’ve ever met, so we all got along like a house on fire from day one. When the label came it was a natural progression!

They actually know wtf they’re doing, haha!

What has been the best part about working with them regularly?

They actually know wtf they’re doing, haha!

What do you enjoy most about living in Australia? Have you ever considered moving to the U.S.?

Australia is absolutely incredible. The standard of living here is quite high and we have beautiful scenery and amazing beaches.

I have definitely considered moving to the States and I would love to one day. But I could probably only do it temporarily, as I just feel way too connected with Sydney.

You and Hydraulix have an amazing chemistry. Do you guys still live together? How much has this arrangement impacted your musical output?

We actually don’t live together anymore as of last month, but we had previously been living together for 3 years. We would write music in our own studio together daily so that was fun.

When you’re not making music, what are you doing?

Either playing video games or reading about making music, haha.

What should we expect from you in terms of releases in the next year?

Maybe an EP or two, some singles, a couple of collabs. I’ve got a collab coming with Rickyxsan soon, which will be dope.

If you could achieve one goal this year, what would it be?

Master the invisible box challenge – still can’t do that shit!
