From Sheffield to the Billboard’s pages, from self-releases to Majestic Casual, and landing four features in the latest Ekali Awaken Mix, Laxcity’s star is undeniably becoming brighter and brighter. With a recently announced agreement with the global booking agency APA and a full eight tracks EP coming soon, it seems our favourite introvert is ready to steal the show in the second half of the year. ‘Changing,’ his brand new heavenly release, out on the giant Majestic Casual, seems the perfect way to kick everything off.
We don’t see Joshua dealing with features too often, but when he does, magic happens. That’s why I’m not afraid to say that ‘Changing’ is the apex of his productions so far, his consecration. It sums up the best of his exquisite downtempo instrumental skills that we’ve tasted through ‘Sunset’ and ‘Good Morning’, and it blends with an incredible vocal line by the american singer Lani Rose. The way the lyrics flow so insistently without giving you time to breathe, sets up a fascinating effect which, at some moments, makes you feel as if you are drowning in the rapids of an agitated river. Laxcity soft base contains and contrasts this feeling and brings you to more mild shores, creating a divine contrast that characterize the entire composition.
We connected with Laxcity to understand if his personality influences his way of producing and collaborating with other artists and how ‘Changing’ was born.
“Its always interesting for me to see how other musicians attempt to merge their styles with my own,” he answered. “It varies with different people. Sometimes I have trouble creating a song around another vocalist’s style, sometimes a vocalist has trouble writing for my songs. It’s all about diving in and finding someone I can really vibe with”. For example, “When working on ‘Changing’ with Lani Rose, the process was nearly effortless since I’ve been friends with him for a while now. The instrumental stood out to him so much and literally in a few hours he came up with some vocals he tracked over it. Once I heard the first vocal take I fell in love, then went ahead to complete the song. In total the process has required just two days.”
We also went further discussing the incoming EP to find out what to expect, “I honestly think the rest of the songs won’t be something mind blowing in terms of style” Laxcity told us. “But I can promise every other song is packed full of different emotions and feelings that I feel anyone listening will strongly resonate with. After ‘Changing’ there will be two more songs that I’ve created with other vocalists. There’s also one particular song where I sing for the first time – It’s something I’m self conscious about but I really want to showcase how far my talents go as an artist.”
