Towering diamond-like stalactites drip in the darkness of an eerie cavern. The droplets bounce off jagged stalagmites as a deep mist settles over the blackened scene. Haunting beasts roam the shadows, their cries distorted and muffled, masking their whereabouts. Your heart beats like a drum at an ancient ceremony while ice runs through your veins. Welcome to ‘niflheim,’ the latest creation from mysterious bass producer saka.
“I’ve always been really enthralled by mythology, whether it be Norse or Greek, especially by the darker and spookier things in it. Niflheim is one of the nine realms in Norse mythology and is supposed to be a misty, frigid, cold world of darkness, and that’s what I was hoping to conjure for my listeners. I wanted to create a soundscape that would be a journey for them – an ebb and flow that felt like a ride of some sort, where they enter this creepy, trippy world, not being able to see anything, and then as the fog starts to clear, they get a rude introduction to the primordial elements and grotesque beings living there,” saka tells us. Drawing inspiration from such a powerful and mystic source sets expectations high, but saka is more than up to the task. Each bar brings listeners deeper into the realm, an uneasiness underlies throughout but it’s balanced by a steady stream of exhilaration. ‘niflheim’ takes listeners into a new world of darkness, get lost in it below and grab the free download.
