Deorro made my office-job toting ass forget it was Thursday and brought plenty of fiery bass to Global Dance Festival’s Pre-Party at Beta Nightclub in Denver.
Beta NightClub was hopping and bumping with plenty of trickles from Global. Like in Cinderella though, once the clock struck midnight, plenty of freaky things started to happen. The crisp sound system, flaring light set up, and tricky dancers made this night one to remember.
I arrived as Sergio Santana was slaying the decks. Sergio is a local DJ who puts the music before his notoriety. Sergio soothed the early birds with some classic deep house vibes, proving to be a tasty appetizer. His sound is fun but dark- just how I like it. By sampling cheeky tracks like Kelis’ ‘Milkshake’ or a well developed bouquet of bass and slicing synths, the variety of his taste in music showed.
Next up was AViVA . She was awarded Denver’s best producer in 2017, and has opened for a lot of big names including Dillon Francis, Jauz, Porter Robinson, and Deorro. AViVA sampled plenty of old school hip hop lyrics, and brought down some eerie big house bass in combination. There was a lot of bad-ass progressions, dark plummets, and metallic industrials topped with ice cold transitions.
Deorro’s performance drew in the crowd ,causing it to brim and boil at the edge. The fever pitched as pandas danced across the screen to the frenetic house pulses of the party prince prodigy. I never thought I would get to hear an EDM remix of ‘The Macarena’ but I did that night, and it was glorious.
Deorro’s music is both emotional and festive, full of light and dark. His flow between tracks rests on his ability to rally the crowd before each sickening drop. He shouts with confidence, thrilling them with countdowns and egging them on into hoots of elation.
There is plenty of old school party vibes in his music, but also homages to modern EDM with Bruno Mars ‘Locked out of Heaven’ and DJ Snake’s ‘Riddim’ covers, burly bass, and charging synths. His aggressive mixing style only translates into an enthusiasm for the party, never steering it down tempo.
