Here’s a man who doesn’t like middle grounds, compromises, shades of any kind and jumps from black to white with extreme nonchalance and pure grace. This and much more is soulecist. For those unfamilair, besides his renowned work behind the curtains for Above and Below the surface, he’s quite a prolific producer with a long-time musical duality. With a little chat before the summer, he indeed told me that these months would have reserved some hot surprises, but damn, the hype was real. He’s already released 5 tracks so far since June but it was with the last rush that the overall quality has jumped higher than ever.
I could define ‘Dark Room’ and ‘Hey Miss’ as two sides of the same coin, like good and evil, but even in this way I wouldn’t do justice to the bottomless difference between these two tunes. They’re on two different planets, in two separate realities that have, as only common ground, soulecist.’s mastery.
‘Dark Room’ is, in its genre, an absolutely groundbreaking tune. Trap, or better, Gospel-Trap at its very finest. Big bass, huge brass, epic sidechained vocals, yes there’s everything you need to turn up any festival crowd, from Burning Man to Creamfields. Soulecist. has purified this gem to perfection getting rid of superfluous canonical elements like build ups and keeping a biting minimalism that will melt your brain down.
‘Hey Miss’, in collaboration with the Frisco’s colleague Xanubis, is, instead, a romance pill, a tender Hip Hop and Future ballad that, in its small way, hits right in the heart. There’s no room for experimentation here, everything flows smoothly as you expect, in what I call, a wonderful, classic way. After all, isn’t that what we need to be cuddled?
