After a couple of eclectic tracks from Anderson .Paak earlier this year, the multi-talented artist has returned with another single from his upcoming project Oxnard, this time enlisting the legendary Kendrick Lamar for a heater titled ‘Tints’. While the two came together in ‘Deep Water’ on Dr. Dre’s Compton album back in 2015, this is the first track that truly highlights the creative genius that both artists evoke.
A funky guitar melody and crisp production distinct to Anderson .Paak’s style is present throughout the track, setting the scene for a classic-to-be. Although summer has come to a close, ‘Tints’ is the ultimate feel-good laid-back tune that helps people hold on to their favourite season.
The lyrics elicit conflicting emotions from both artists, as they struggle between wanting to be free and needing privacy. “I been feelin’ kinda cooped up, cooped up; I’m tryna get some fresh air”, .Paak sings, before adding “I can’t be ridin’ round and round that open strip; I need tints”. Kendrick stays true to the message in a typical Kendrick fashion with his raspy vocals beautifully complimenting the groovy background.
If the rest of Oxnard is similar to ‘Tints’, we can’t wait to hear it. Check it out below!
