Guest Mix + Interview – L*o*J

by Colin

While Switzerland may be renowned for its stunning alps, high-quality chocolate and precision watches, they’re also responsible for one of the hottest up-and-coming duos in bass music: L*o*J. Whether it’s collaborating with bass heavyweights like Dabow, Jon Casey and aedfx., or putting out tunes on Below The Surface and phuture collective, they’re running the underground. Their style blends Carmack-inspired trap with wild experimental bass leanings and lush wordly soundscapes. This is put on full display in their near 40 minute Guest Mix that is made up entirely of their own productions and collaborations. In addition to the incredible mix, we also connected with L*o*J for a quick interview. Find out what they love and hate about each other, what makes a good collaborator, and what they have in store next. Oh and don’t forget to grab the free download of the mix here.

Tell us about the mix. How did you go about putting it together? What should we expect?

We’re gonna go with our feels, just trying to set a good vibe.

Were you both born and raised in Switzerland? What’s it like there?

So Josh was born in Sacramento and raised in Switzerland, Loris was born and raised in Switzerland. It’s nice, very cold in winters but skiing is cool.

Is there currently much of trap/bass scene in Switzerland? If not, how did you get into it?

Not really, barely any parties…we were watching YouTube videos of festivals :D

How did you two first meet?

We met when we were about 14 and started creating beats about a year later when Loris brought his Mac over. We created L*o*J in the end of 2014.

What’s your favorite and least favorite things about each other?

Josh: So my favourite thing about Loris is that he’s always in a fun and positive mood (which I’m not always in lol), he can turn a bad day upside-down.

What I least like about Loris is that he will be late almost all the time to just about anything.

Loris: My favourite thing about Josh is that he doesn’t give a fuck about how we act or what people think about us when we’re out, it makes it easy to just be ourselves!

What I don’t like about Josh is that when he is doing something you have to literally yell at him to get his attention! And not just once hahah

Aside from other music, what inspires you creatively?

We like to build things like our diffusers etc. in the studio. We like to draw, go out and explore, do psychedelics :D

From a music standpoint, what do you have in store for the remainder of 2018 and 2019?

We have a HUGE EP coming with our bro Mo Vibez. Many many singles and perhaps a Sample pack in 2019.

Loris just started his hip hop beat side project LoLo beats and Josh will be releasing his first Psytrance EP soon.

We make other genres like dnb or techno to but just for fun :D

You’ve done a lot of collabs. What makes a good collaborator?

We feel it right away if we can connect with an artist. Once we connect it all just falls into the right spots. Leaving room for the other person to be creative or to give them the go to completely reconstruct the track. Be humble and consider the other artists style…you want a perfect blend of both.

Are there any plans for a trip or tour to North America?

Josh is currently living in Los Angeles until Feb. Loris will be visiting for over a month, we will be going out to Oakland and Santa Cruz for 2 great shows in mid November.

What would you be doing if the internet didn’t exist?

Making music for our own pleasure. Being outside exploring, jamming out and having fun :D
