chromonicci is easily one of 2018’s biggest breakout stars. His signature niccibounce took over SoundCloud and quickly made him one of the most highly regarded talents on the platform. He first made waves with his stunning future beat instrumentals but he really showcased his diversity as an artist with his recent debut EP Bounce Back, an aptly titled work that was created after his first EP was stolen along with his computer. The experience initially rattled his musical identity. Thankfully chromonicci was able to escape that rut and create a body of work that’s nothing short of stunning. From the incredible production, to him singing and rapping, Bounce Back demonstrates that he truly can ‘Do It All.’ Given our love for chromonicci and the fact that he’s fresh off the release, we had to connect with him for a guest mix and interview. We talked to him about the EP, the robbery, getting props from Sam Gellaitry and more. As for the mix, “I’d say it’s more like a vibe booster. It can kinda be played anywhere!” – chromonicci. How did you first get involved with music?
My mom actually got me into production and playing piano. She taught me a really dope triad chord progression, and it really helped me get my ear right! So, yeah I guess I’ve played piano since I started producing 4 years ago!
You’ve produced under a few aliases in the past, what led you to launching chromonicci?
Yeah, I was honestly looking for something that was both personal to me, and had something unique about it. Chromonicci is actually a family nickname I had when I was a baby!
I tried to get back to having fun making music. After a lot of beats for fun, I kinda snapped out of it!
You’ve said that you were struggling with your own musical identity this year, can you speak to that period and how you were able to overcome it?
Man…I think the main issue that I was having was that I had to accept that my sound would never quite be the same after the robbery. I was really hard on myself and I expected so much! In terms of overcoming it, I tried to get back to having fun making music. After a lot of beats for fun, I kinda snapped out of it!
You just got some love from Sam Gellaitry. I know he’s a big inspiration, what did it mean to you?
That was seriously ridiculous LMAO. Still can’t believe it. It was an amazing reminder that I’m doing something right!
YEAH lost the entire other EP, so I actually started this one from scratch this summer.
Earlier this year you had your laptop stolen which caused you to lose all you music. How did you deal with such huge blow? Did you have to completely redo your EP?
Yeah like I mentioned a lil earlier, it really rattled my musical identity for a bit. However me and my girlfriend prayed a ton and pushed through it. Amazingly so much of the community pitched in and got us both back on our feet. AND…YEAH lost the entire other EP, so I actually started this one from scratch this summer.
How does it feel to have a body of music out in the world?
Amazing man. I never thought I’d be able to put together a project, so it’s a really dope feeling!
It has a very diverse selection that all fits within the “niccibounce” sound. Was the intent of the EP to demonstrate your range?
That was my goal exactly. I also wanted to give everyone something to listen to. Heck, maybe even a new song.
I actually grew up singing! I was a tad scared, but mostly I felt that the vocals I added took away quality from my songs.
This year saw you transitioning into adding your own vocals on tracks. Were you afraid to sing on your songs? Have you always been a singer on the low?
LOLOL yeah I actually grew up singing! I was a tad scared, but mostly I felt that the vocals I added took away quality from my songs. I didn’t have a mic for a HOT minute so vocals sounded like trash. To be honest, I’m still pretty dissatisfied with the quality of my vocals, but gotta take it one step at a time!
You’re also rapping on on the aptly titled ‘Do It All.’ Is that new for you too?
YEPPPPPPP. I don’t really like my rap voice, but it’s a work in progress. Also writing lyrics can get tiring haha.
I’m sure the EP was a huge milestone for you. What’s next for chromonicci? Any major goals for the rest of 2018 or 2019?
Yeah man. Main goal is to break through and reach as many people with my sound as possible. I want to break into streaming and then some. Maybe get a TV or commercial placement.
