Brasstracks Pay Homage To Kendrick Lamar With ‘Good Kid, Brass City’

by Colin

Brasstracks are no strangers to reworking hip-hop classics in their signature style. In the past few years they’ve taken on everyone from Kanye West to Drake, Lil Uzi Vert, Aaliyah and more. Today they’ve unleashed their most daring cover to date, a nearly eight minute work that sees the duo taking on Kendrick Lamar’s Good Kid, M.A.A.D City. With the project turning 6 today, Brasstracks decided to pay homage to an album that has inspired them greatly. Featuring 7 tracks rolled together, ‘Good Kid, Brass City’ is a quick trip through the classic with a fresh sound

“So we were on tour a couple weeks ago and we were listening to Kendrick Lamar’s full discography, and the album that still resonates with the most is Good Kid Maad City. We had the crazy idea to make an ode to Kendrick Lamar from the songs from the album.

Most of the songs on the project have a really healthy relationship between jazz and hip-hop. It was pretty easy for us as jazz musicians turned hip-hop producers, to go into the studio with all of our friends and make some magic happen based on what Kendrick did in 2012. This was honestly just fun for us. If anybody else really digs it, Kendrick hears it or something crazy, that’s just a bonus. Because this was an amazing project for us to do.” – Brasstracks

‘Good Kid, Brass City’ once again proves that Brasstracks can do wrong, even when they’re flipping classics. Stream it below and be sure to check out the behind the scenes video.
