PREMIERE: So Sus Balances Emotion and Intensity On ‘Pantheon’

by Colin

Vancouver based producer So Sus is back in his greatest form yet with ‘Pantheon’. The track which draws its namesake from the ancient Roman temple is fittingly spiritual and haunting. Built around stellar vocal bends, that conjure an evocative melancholy energy, it actually drew its inspiration from an unlikely source. “Last year I was listening to a lot of what people would call mumble rap.I know people hate on mumble rap it, but a lot of the time I think of it as voice as an instrument, cause there’s usually an interesting tonality in those songs with the voice and I guess thinking about stuff like that is what got me here. Somehow.”

The sound is as unorthodox as the inspiration itself. The layers of rich vocal bends feel like ghostly voices drifting through your psyche. While they remain present throughout, the song’s energy shifts greatly with time. From the dreamy darkness to the pounding bass and gritty drops, ‘Pantheon’ will take you on a emotional roller-coaster that’s ripe with uncertainty. This uncertainty is a projection of what So Sus was going through as he wrote the song. “I made this track during a time when I was facing a tough situation where I pending a decision on whether I could stay in Canada, a place I had at that time called home for 7 years. So naturally I spent a lot of time stressing about my future and thinking of the possibility of having to leave. It was definitely a more sombre and melancholic time for me,” he explains. Tough times feed great art and ‘Pantheon’ is a true testament to this. Stream it below and grab the free download.
