Guest Mix + Interview – TVBOO

by Colin

Mississippi’s own TVBOO exploded onto our radar earlier this year when we premiered his sfam collab ‘dahshigo.’ Since then, he hasn’t slowed down, dropping banger after banger. His talent and innovative style recently caught the attention of Quality Goods Records and resulted in a fresh single release alongside sfam and one of the standout tracks from QGRC-004 with ‘Flava.’ If that wasn’t enough, he also killed it at Lost Lands and produced a track for The Kansas City Chiefs. 2018 has been a huge year for TVBOO, so it’s overdue that we catch up with him for a Guest Mix + interview. He dropped off an absolutely beastly mix featuring unreleased heat from himself and some of the hottest artists in the bass scene. He also managed to throw in Lil Wayne & Britney Spears. How he managed to make it work, I’m unsure, but it certainly does! Bump the mix below and get familiar with TVBOO.

What should we expect from the mix? What is it the soundtrack to?

Expect some eargasms cuz there’s a lot of super fun stuff in there including some unreleased music from some very talented producers and myself. Expect to take an adventure somewhere new, unusual, and a little taboo ;)

If there was a rave in hell, this is the mix that would be playing.

When I think of music in Mississippi I think of blues, maybe jazz and hip-hop. What led you to electronic music?

It’s weird cuz there’s very little electronic music in Mississippi and everyone is always tripped out when I say I’m from there. I’ve always been a fan of music that makes me move or feel a certain way. So it was only natural that I found my way to dance music.

My dad’s exact words were “I don’t understand it, but it’s cool as hell.”

You recently tweeted, “Really funny listening to my country father try to explain to his country friends what I do and the type of music I make.” How does he describe your music? Do your parents understand what you do?

My dad’s exact words were “I don’t understand it, but it’s cool as hell.” Mom doesn’t quite get it either but shes a fan. She jams ‘Wook Worm’ all the time haha. My parents are extremely supportive and they always have been. They would haul me and my drums to bars/clubs when I was 13 playing in metal bands. They’d let me have band practice at their house even though they hated the music. I wouldn’t be where I’m at if it wasn’t for their support.

Can you tell us a little bit about your connection with nature? What is your favorite place in the world?

I spent a lot of time hunting, fishing, and just doing random country things so it just feels right when I’m surrounded by nature. My favorite place in the world is this little hippy town in Ozark Mountains called Eureka Springs.

You’ve done both live performances and DJ sets. Can you tell us a little bit about your live set? How does it differ from you DJing?

I take the drums out my original tracks and load the samples on to midi pads so I can play them live. It’s a lot fun for me because I’m a drummer so it feels right and I feel like it’s something different for the crowd to vibe to. It also presents a challenge for me cuz I’m having to mix and play drums at the same time. I bust the live set every time I play a new city and I only do it for about 20% of my set so I’m able to showcase myself and still give the people the DJ set they want.

You’ve collaborated with sfam on a number of records. How did you first link up and how has your relationship evolved with time?

I booked them to play in Jackson MS about 2 years ago and we just hit it off and kept in touch. We’ve both been working really hard and have always pushed each other to do better. Super easy dudes to work with and they’ve become some of my closest friends. Love those dudes like brothers.

You sampled Super Troopers on “Littering and Smoking Reefer,” what does the movie mean to you? Where does rank among your favourite comedies?

That’s the best opening scene in a comedy movie hands down. It’s one of my favorites but I gotta say my favorite comedy is The Trailer Park Boys and you’ll be hearing my take on that show very soon ;)

It’s honestly one of the craziest things to ever happen to me because I never thought I’d be making music for the NFL. They come out on the field to it every home game.

You produced a song for the Kansas City Chiefs earlier this year. Can you tell us a little bit about how this came to happen? What did it mean to you?

The Chiefs hit up a handful of producer to make their entrance song for the pre-season. They were very specific about they wanted and Hyphee and I just so happened to be the producers to deliver. They liked it so much that they decided to use it for the regular season which is INSANE! It’s honestly one of the craziest things to ever happen to me because I never thought I’d be making music for the NFL. They come out on the field to it every home game.

What’s the craziest thing that’s happened to you in 2018?

Lost Lands for sure. I was playing the same time as some really good acts and still had 4-5 thousand people show up. It was honestly the best night of my life and opened up a lot of opportunities.

Your music possesses an almost extraterrestrial energy. Are you into science fiction?

Not too much but I do like Star Wars. I’m more into guns, hunting, fishing, beer, football, and the USA baby. Yee Haw.

Does the pope shit in the woods? Best believe they out there. I wonder if they like dubstep…

Do you think aliens exist?

Do I think aliens exist? Does the pope shit in the woods? Best believe they out there. I wonder if they like dubstep….

It’s starting to feel like experimental bass is becoming saturated and losing some of what made it special. We’ve seen similar trends in trap and future bass in recent years. What can be done to stop this from happening?

I say that you’re looking in the wrong places. Every time I feel that, I find some new producer that is making something fresh. I think if you just be yourself and make what you wanna make and don’t give a fuck about what anyone thinks you’ll keep it fresh everytime.
