PREMIERE: Moore Kismet Unveils His Elaborate Skillset in ‘Opposites’ [Interview]

by A. Samuel Lewis

The throbbing heart of SoundCloud’s youth scene, Omar ‘Moore Kismet’ Davis is already presenting himself as one of the most promising up and coming talents in the bass music scene at the astounding age of 14. With two EPs under his belt and an official remix for Hekler & Glades ‘404’ on Never Say Die Records, the future looks bright for the Adelanto, California native.

In his latest release, Omar pulls yet another trick from his sleeve, demonstrating the seemingly limitless range of his talents by writing and performing the vocal accompaniment for the track. “I actually never planned on writing lyrics and singing. I had every intention to submit it to you guys as an instrumental and let it be,” he reveals about the framework for the track. With a skillset as diverse as Moore Kismet possesses at such a young age, we expect nothing but persistent growth and continued astonishment in the coming years.

It was a delight to catch up with Omar to learn more about the challenges he faces as such a fresh face in the scene and he was kind enough to tease some spicy upcoming collaborations he’s waiting to release with the come of the New Year. What has been the most challenging aspect of producing at such a young age?

I guess the most challenging part of producing at the age I’m at is trying to get people to believe that I actually am 14. So many people ask and occasionally I have to send some kind of proof to them. This was more common once I finally began to start releasing things like the Hues EP, my ‘404’ Remix, and ‘Void,’ as they all showed huge evolution in style from prior projects.

What first interested you about the experimental trap genre, and how did you first begin to conceptualize how you might like to craft your own sound?

What really interested me about experimental trap when I first got into the genre was the really unique and differentiated sound design. I wanted to do things that others may do when they create new sounds but in a different way. I wanted to have those signature samples/sounds that would instantly allow you to tell that it was one of my songs. Like the vocal chants, the arrangements, etc. I think I’m finally starting to break that barrier.

Tell us a little bit about your vision with the HUES EP, what energy and emotion were you hoping to cultivate for your audience with this project?

The Hues EP was a Pride Month-oriented compilation of tracks which served to show the emotions of LGBTQ+ people in every track. The first single, ‘Hues’ with my absolute favorite vocalist in the world Flowerkid, is supposed to show the emotions of a closeted LGBTQ+ person trying to come out to their crush, who may not even be the same sexuality or be apart of the community at all. The following single ‘Sometimes’, is meant to be the aftermath of what ‘Hues’ laid out.

Just by creating new ideas every day, regardless of how bad it was in the end. The ‘Trials’ title came simply from every track having gone through a trial-or-error process.

Your style seems to have really grown and matured between your first project TRIALS and the more recent HUES release. What have you done from a technical standpoint to help nurture this consistent improvement?

Just by creating new ideas every day, regardless of how bad it was in the end. The ‘Trials’ title came simply from every track having gone through a trial-or-error process. Working on new sound design and resampling techniques definitely helped me improve my technical skills. One I’d like to expand on is Fruity Granulizer, a stock plugin in the FL Studio 12 DAW. I learned how to use this plugin via my buddy Krischvn. It’s insanely useful when making some crazy new sounds!

‘Opposites’ is the first release where you provided both the production and the vocal accompaniment — was this a goal you’ve always had, or did the track provide the key inspiration for the experiment?

I actually never planned on writing lyrics and singing on ‘Opposites’. I had every intention to submit it to you guys as an instrumental and let it be, haha! But then one of my friends told me that I was really good at singing and that I needed to utilize my talent as a singer more often in my music. Which I was very reluctant to do at first, but I grew to it and will be trying to do it more often with future tunes.

As both a producer and vocalist, do you feel certain songs are more equipped for vocals, while others might be more suitable as just an instrumental or do you think there’s a balance that can be found regardless of the track?

I do feel that certain songs of mine are a better fit for vocals of any kind, whether it be mine or another vocalist’s. There isn’t really gonna be much of a balance, it just depends on how the overall production comes out. If it has the structure and motif of a song that could use vocals, then I’ll get vocals for it. If not, then it’ll remain instrumental.

never be afraid to release music…You need to take the initiative to make your dreams a reality.

Do you have any advice or confidence to instill in other aspiring young producers?

I know a lot of producers my age or slightly older/younger, you know of a few, that are incredibly talented and beginning to find their sound. However, they don’t know anyone outside of their small circle. One thing that I’d say to anyone else who wishes to pursue a career in music, especially EDM/trap/bass music, is to always reach out to new people and make new friends, big or small! When I dropped my 404 Remix, that connected me with Hekler and Gladez, who I talk with and support regularly. Also, never be afraid to release music. Someone will find you, share you with their friends and think that you’re the best thing since sliced bread! You need to take the initiative to make your dreams a reality.

Are there any exciting releases or collaborations that you have in store for fans in the coming year?

I have insane collaborations with Holly, Leotrix, SHSTR, Crimson Child, Capshun, shibuya., A Boy & A Girl, Dr. Ozi, and more hitting your airwaves next year. In terms of solo releases, I am currently in the process of working on a second album and another EP for the books! I also have another Pride Month EP which I wrapped up almost immediately after the release of Hues. There are also so many more reboots and remixes that I have for y’all that you’ll just have to wait until 2019 to hear them!
