PREMIERE: Allen Mock Reveals Sonic Depth in His Flip of ‘High Breed’

by A. Samuel Lewis

With two EPs in his wake already, Tokyo-based Allen Mock has more than demonstrated confidence and maturity, despite being one of the more novice artists to enter the realm of hybrid-trap. Production seems to come naturally to Mock, the complexity of his tracks and the ability to candidly rotate between harmonious synth melodies, daunting waves of bass and peculiar fills with seamless precision.

Regarding tokey’s ‘High Breed’ as one of his favorite releases from the past year, Mock sets to work infusing enriching bass swells and riveting production, while utilizing the middle-eastern flutes and drum samples from the original to sprinkle the perfect touch of nostalgia.

I loved the atmosphere and the unsettling tension in the break. I originally wanted to use this song as part of a cool turning point in my sets, but then I figured why not just make my own iteration on the drop, Allen Mock style!

The goal of his flips is two-pronged: looking to weave his own style and influence into a track, while crafting a resonance that will work seamlessly into his live sets, honing in on the familiarity of the track by preserving sentimental aspects of the original while the unbridled energy of the drops is of the unmistakable Mock-variety.

This flip has a very intense and gritty synth that’s different from the original one, while keeping some aspects/elements of the song that I found particularly intriguing,” Mock shares regarding his latest interpretation of ‘High Breed’.

Regardless of the intended application, Allen Mock’s revisions provide impeccable enhancement to an inexplicably brilliant track, highlighting tokey’s production intricacies with precision while expanding the drop into a whirlwind of dark, tenacious energy.
