Chee Makes A Bass Statement With ‘Read Once Then Destroy’ EP

by Steph Contant

Chee‘s name has quickly become synonymous with ingenuity and incessant innovation. Over the years, the South African mastermind has refined his artistic abilities to establish himself as one of the most unique producers in the realm of bass. Through an extensive catalog of releases dating back to 2014, the musical genius has only continued to evolve his sound design, proving himself as a force to be reckoned with. Consistently blurring the lines between dubstep, drum & bass, trap, and just about every other bass genre that comes to mind, Chee has grown to be among the most versatile and eclectic producers in the game.

This unending evolution as a musician has earned Chee respect from the industry’s finest talents, having recently embarked with the legendary G Jones on his The Ineffable Truth tour alongside Tsuruda. With this opportunity, the now-Philadelphia-based artist can showcase his skills to the North American bass scene, hopefully exposing him to the masses and earning him the widespread recognition he deserves.

Only six months after releasing his Aggressive Generosity EP on Bassrush, Chee has returned to unleash another powerful four-track project titled Read Once Then Destroy, and although it’s only February, this latest work will surely be a contender for EP of the year.

With the first two tracks, Chee keeps the aggression at a minimum while still flexing his crisp sound design. ‘Read’ is an ambient bass jam, laden with Chee’s distinct synths organized in a groovy, melodic arrangement to create an easy introduction to the rest of the project. ‘Once’ shows listeners a new side to the talented genius, where impeccable production shines in the form of a UK garage bop. Again easy to listen to, the second track of the project is the perfect transition from the soothing beginning to the madness that follows. The real highlights of Read Once Then Destroy come in the form of the last two tracks, ‘Then’ and ‘Destroy’. The former is kicked off with an ominous, demonic soundscape, before Chee launches the song into a display of his distinguishable synths and punchy percussion. Soon after, ‘Then’ is catapulted into bass insanity, where contorted frequencies are manipulated to create the meanest energy. ‘Destroy’ follows suit, where the eerie essence from ‘Then’ is kept alive and pushed to another dimension. A complex introduction leads listeners to more sound engineering mastery with unparalleled energy and nothing but the cleanest sounds. With one of his heaviest tracks to date, Chee makes a statement of his brilliance with ‘Destroy’.
