California-based Dane Morris has been a major player in the electronic trap game for several years now. Co-founding Team Supreme in 2012 and founding ADBC Records in 2017, Morris has curated a special place for talented artists to display their creations. Inspired heavily by the DIY originality of Odd Future, Great Dane has crafted his brand into something truly its own, being a guiding force for some of the major trap labels in the scene today. His first album release, Alpha Dog, was released in 2013 to rave reviews, and he’s since had 3 more full album releases, all of which have been major successes. Looking into 2019, fans were left wondering how his sound and vision could progress, and now ‘Drop Top’ is his answer.
‘Drop Top’ is Great Dane’s first release of the year, and if it’s an inkling of what’s to come for the rest of the year, we’re all in for a major treat. Boasting a beat that makes it borderline impossible not to bop your head to, Morris has manufactured the perfect late-night drive with the windows down type of vibe. The vocal work is stunning and simplistic, only using a short overall sample and chopping it up to perfection. The vibe is both relaxing and ego-feeding, as the addition of the flute takes the edge off while the vocals illicit actual feelings of cruising in a drop top. Great Dane has once again shown that he is an absolute master at his craft, staying true to his roots while building on his already extremely established base. This one should leave fans eager to see what else he has in store for 2019, and if this is any indication, it’s going to be a massive year.
