Peekaboo Demolishes with Latest EP ‘Wrecking Ball’

by Alex Bell

Peekaboo to a child is an age-old game that leads to laughs and an overall sense of well-being. Peekaboo to a bass music fan is an artist that has quickly become an unrelenting force of aggressive wubs and unparalleled sound design, contorting listeners’ mugs into ugly, grimey bass faces. Hailing from Detroit, Michigan he first garnered major acclaim with his track ‘Wobbly’ in 2017.  ‘Wobbly’ was first heavily supported by Bassnectar, not a huge surprise considering Peekaboo’s first big collaboration ‘Disrupt the System’ was released with him later that year. Since, he’s made not waves, but an absolute tsunami on the scene. He’s earned international praise with both his Imposters and Maniac EP’s, with a combined almost 1.5 million streams on Soundcloud alone. This was most assuredly helped due to the fact that both were released on the absurdly hot Wakaan label, which prides itself on allowing growing artists to showcase their talents on a platform that pushes individuality and expression. Fitting in a box is exactly what the label aims not to do, and Peekaboo has surely catapulted himself wholeheartedly into the throng.

His newest work, the Wrecking Ball EP, Peekaboo takes his already signature sound (a feat almost unheard of for someone so fresh on the scene) and both hones and expands on his groundwork. The EP opens with its namesake track, which draws the listener in with its repeated vocals “I’ma tear the fucking place down” before going into the hypnotic first half of the initial drop. Quickly though, it descends into sharp, thick bass lines that will make people voluntarily get into bar fights they know they can’t win. Just thinking about the sound is sure to induce heavily increased levels of adrenaline. Next comes ‘Whistleblower’, a dark, airy, floaty jawn if you’ve ever heard one. This is a prime example of a song that would be great amounts of fun to get weird to. ‘Hypnotendiez’ follows, which between its vocals and overall vibe, seems like an ancient ritual to summon spirits of the dead. Last on the EP is ‘Swingin’ and just as its vocals state, it doesn’t give one single fuck. I imagine Casper the ghost wearing a fat gold chain bumping this song as he floats menacingly down the sidewalk. Harnessing crunchy alien noises and impeccable sound design, this is a perfect way to cap off the release. Peekaboo is quickly becoming a household name, and with already confirmed 2019 collaborations with Subtronics, Calcium, and Bassnectar, the sky is surely the limit for the Detroit native.
