With the release of his debut EP Tangled Roots, Floret Loret has officially arrived. The talented producer has been honing his skills and making waves on SoundCloud for the past few years, but this project takes his sound to a new trajectory. Drawing influences from Flume and Electric Mantis and blending them with a myriad of emotions, embodying relationships and elements of nature, Tangled Roots is the groundbreaking debut artists dream of.
From beginning to end it’s an epic journey teeming with emotion. The project was a true labour of love and a piece of its author. “‘Tangled Roots’ is a representation of what goes on in my mind. I produce music as a coping mechanism. I tend to overthink a lot and I sometimes get lost in my own head. These threads of thought become intertwined with my expression of music. Music helps me untie those knots. Fortunately I have an amazing support system, not only through my family, but my close friends and mentors that keep me grounded whenever I begin to get lost in my own thoughts. I’ve found a coherent outlet to put these ideas into a form that make sense to myself and I’ve dedicated some of the songs to the people that I care about the most,” Floret Loret expands.
‘Amaryllis’ opens the EP with stirring chords and snappy drums. The soundscape is alluring and filled with passion and beauty. It’s the feeling of watching the sun rise with the person you love most. Waves of emotion break through as it creates a hopeful energy. ‘Juniper’ shifts directions combining melancholic melodies and haunting undertones. Drawing inspiration from the juniper bonsai tree, the drops are contorted and brooding, yet still stunning. There are few songs that manage to be this experimental, original and moving all at once.
The midway point presents one of the project’s strongest efforts in ‘Cantuta’. Building upon the framework of ‘Juniper,’ ‘Cantuta’ presents a masterclass in juxtaposition. Welcoming synths sparkle like rays of sunshine before dropping listeners into a canyon of punchy drums and bass. And, that’s just the beginning. The final drop removes all connection to nature and dumps listeners through a black hole. Time and space are bent and reality is questioned as you drift through dimensions at warp speed.
‘Puya Raimondii’ takes its name from the Peruvian plant Queen of the Andes, which takes 8 to 10 years to grow; a fitting title for a song that took nearly 3 years of fine-tuning. Taking us to the top of the iconic mountain range, Floret Loret provides breathtaking views, spiking our serotonin as we bask in the Earth’s majesty. Birds chirp sweetly in your ear and your heart races as you climb higher admiring snow-capped peaks.
“‘Árbol’ is the spanish word for tree. To me, this song symbolizes my parents. They have helped me plant a seed and watched it grow into a big beautiful tree. They have been supportive and have always encouraged me to find new creative techniques, helping me construct better songs, and telling a story through each track; where there is a beginning, middle, and end. This track is one of my hugest projects; it’s an enormous composition dedicated to them,” Floret Loret says, explaining the track far better than I could. The project’s finale is a fitting send off for a remarkable body of work. Continuing to tap into nature while remaining experimental, it’s nothing short of brilliant.
Tangled Roots is a showcase of Floret’s Loret’s wealth of talent. With recent support from Zeds Dead, Ekali, Alison Wonderland, graves and a massive debut EP, expect to see his name popping up on “artist to watch” lists throughout 2019. Stream the full project below and grab it here.
