PREMIERE: Fabian Mazur’s Latest is a Downright Scorcher

by A. Samuel Lewis

Authenticity can just as quickly be a saving grace to revitalize and revamp an artist’s career as it can be a perilous shift in style that doesn’t quite hit at home with fans the way it was intended. The overall increase in digital streaming platforms and the rise of new innovative technology that allows producers to work from nearly any level of skill has created a tumultuous environment that demands creative perseverance.

It sure is tough to maintain what fans consider to authenticity, especially in a genre that changes its sound so much,” Copenhagen-based production veteran Fabian Mazur reveals. “I’ve been thinking about the authenticity of my music a lot during the past 2 years and I’ve been trying to keep some of the elements of my older sounds in there,” he continues regarding his latest single release ‘On Fire’, which utilizes similar reggae-inspired vocals as a number of Mazur’s earliest breakaway releases.

Sprinkling a subtle taste of nostalgia, the vocals of the track give rise to an insatiable pattern of dilating synths and an uptempo drum accordance, “Usually I don’t do vocals until I have a solid track together but for this one I actually built it around the vocals because I did the break and vocals first. I love when the vocals create a groove in a drop but it can be hard to do because it needs to be short stabby words or chops,” he discloses.

Even despite the choppy appeal as provided from the vocal sample, an expertly timed loop, and well-versed mastering create a silky smooth finish for the track that ingeniously leverages fragments of the chorus to contrast towering walls of echoing bass in the drop. “Mixing sure plays a big role in my process, I always get my mastering done out-of-house because I tend to like another set of ears on my stuff before I release it,” Mazur shares regarding the finishing touches that go into each release. “I wouldn’t say that it’s very creative because I do most of my mixing as I produce, but getting a mix to sound tight is very important to me,” he continues.

As the chaotic arena of trap music perpetuates, Fabian Mazur boldly trudges forward, utilizing components from the earliest stages of his career coupled with fresh techniques and a tireless desire for perfection to maintain a sense of authenticity in each of his releases.
