PREMIERE: Phers Gets Hype with ‘Blanco’

by Alex Bell

Bay Area local and experimental bass aficionado Ross McPherson is a man moved by his surroundings. Citing the “deep urban counterculture and artistic soul,” environment prevalent in his little chunk of Northern California as inspiration, it’s no wonder he’s found a home in a genre that throws normality and conventionalism to the wind. Going by his producing name Phers, he’s prepped and ready to unleash the culmination of his efforts to hone his craft.

His newest piece, ‘Blanco,’ is part of his upcoming EP Alleyways, which comes out on the 28th. Alleyways is a “giant step forward” in finding his sound, and a “representation of all the growth, beauty, love, and frustration he’s encountered” since moving. Phers describes ‘Blanco’ as “dark, heavy, driving, and aggressive,” and I’d wholeheartedly agree. Harnessing wavy alien wubs and Biggie vocals, it’s hard not to think of this song as anything but saucy. He blends elongated lows and quick, sharp almost samurai sword-like highs, making something certainly irresistible to stay still to. This song has heaps of attitude and is sure to induce some funky dance floor jives.

The most important aspect of the music making process for Phers is making sure he’s matching the vibe and energy he wants to convey through his sound. With ‘Blanco’ he’s giving us a sneak peek into just what he’s capable of, with Alleyways being his full-blown showcase. This is a must-listen for bass music lovers, and should leave your ever-awaiting ears on edge for what comes next.
