Nitti Gritti and Hoodlit Shatter the Backboard On ‘Ballin’

by Tony Leonard

Southern Florida based producer Ricky Mears started his career under his real name. If you have paid attention to the scene lately you should be familiar with his reinforced moniker of Nitti Gritti. Being introduced to house music in 2005, it was only a matter of time before he would become a master of the art himself. Mears would then go on to discover Skrillex through Slipknot and become even more immersed in the culture. Since stepping foot into the scene he has released almost 50 tracks including multiple remixes, edits, and collaborations and boasts a near 50k following on SoundCloud. Carrying a monumental catalog with releases on the likes of Confession, Mad Decent, and Kannibalen Records he presents his second Quality Goods Records release with Hoodlit titled ‘Ballin‘ which features Guapdad 4000.

The California based rapper had his first official single ‘Money‘ released in 2017. He then went on to drop a full album later that year. Guapdad 4000 introduces his energetic vocals over what appears to be a simple rap beat at first glance. Nitti Gritti then punches through with a powerful drop that has an aggressive melody riding over thick 808 layers before going into the second verse. Shortly after, the chaos is reinstated and raises the vigorous strength that ‘Ballin’ carries. A hybrid of rap, trap and a smudge of dubstep is served on a golden platter with impeccable structure and production. With Nitti Gritti being an Icon Collective graduate, his unprecedented work ethic only continues to impress.
