Oddprophet Designs a Ritualistic Bass Purge

by A. Samuel Lewis

A one-year hiatus directly following the release of his debut two-track EP in late 2015, UK’s Oddprophet gallantly shifted gears, transitioning from a brief foxtrot with Drum & Bass into the swift waltz of Dubstep. A sinister allure, as depicted in his Precognition EP, distinguishes the style of Oddprophet from the masses, catering a radical, bass-infused sound that cleverly toes the fringe of eclectic bass music.

Further developing his ominous guise, ‘The Devil’ lurks menacingly in the distance like the suspense-building cuts of an old horror flick before a thundering ripple of bass permeates the foreground. The hairs begin to bristle the back of your neck, a perilous ensemble of strings chirr hauntingly as the dire ethos of the track expands into acute stabs of penetrative bass, furious mixdowns, and intimidating breaks.

Shrouded in obscurity, ‘The Devil’ further demonstrates Oddprophet’s impressive range and propensity to facilitate complex soundscapes, speaking volumes toward his production craft and furthering the anticipation toward his next release.
