OK. Kevin Makes Trap Wubby Again With ‘Mad’

by Alex Bell

Charleston based Kevin McVicker, better known as OK. Kevin, is a swiftly emerging talent in the realm of all things dark and bassy. In early 2016 he graduated from the prestigious Cosmic Academy Music Production School and began his production career on a submarine while serving in the Navy. In the beginning months of 2018 he released his first single titled ‘Kill You’, which garnered him major praise, reaching #7 on the Beatport dubstep Top 100 charts. Since, he’s had several other singles reach the Beatport charts, solidifying him as a local favorite in the Charleston area. 2019 very well could be a breakout year for this youthful talented producer, with multiple singles already released to the pleasure of everyone that has already discovered him. His sound is evolving from his early hybrid trap releases, choosing to instead wade more into the murky depths of all things experimental bass. His newest release ‘Mad’ is a perfect melding of the two genres, creating a culmination of all the experience and creativity he’s honed since his humble beginnings in the production world.

‘Mad’ begins with an long, airy introduction that really sets the inky vibe of the overall piece, with his separate layers being both collective and distinct. The first drop features a sharp crunch at first, followed by quick hollow wubs that sound like a really aggressive boomerang. This quick transition from hard hitting bass lines to a softer but still concrete section creates a sense of space and will surely push dance floors to pull off their best improvised moves. The second drop features notes that are held much longer, drawing the listener in to the sound waves much like the moon pulls in the tide. This is a fantastic middle ground track that breaks down genre barriers and mixes the best parts of trap with bass. OK. Kevin has surely showcased that he is anything but just “OK”.
