ATLiens & Blanke Team Up for Dark, Destructive ‘Contact’

by Alex Bell

Georgia-Based ATLiens have been on an absolute tear lately, assaulting listener’s ears with their special blend of hard-hitting, ominous, experimental trap. They first achieved major notoriety with their collaboration with Bassnectar titled ‘Interlock’, just a few years ago. Since, they’ve honed their craft and reached unprecedented levels of quality in their sound design, sure to turn even the most veteran of bass-music lovers’ heads. Now, they’ve teamed up with Australian midtempo artist Blanke for their first release of 2019.

Dark and hard-hitting are definitely the happy middle-ground that these two artists have found coming together, as ‘Contact’ would be fitting background music while speeding down the River Styx. It harnesses the punchy, well-rounded low end of midtempo while incorporating beat arrangement and switch-ups of trap; an actual blending of genres that is so important when bringing together artists that usually portray different styles. The first drop is much more towards the traditional midtempo vibe, with an exceptionally wide soundscape and a more formulaic beat pattern. The second drop is faster due to the addition of extra notes, making it more of a futuristic machine gun sound, rather than a mortar going off in the first drop. The final drop is absolutely massive in comparison though, as it starts off with a drawn-out high-pitched alien synth and culminates into what I can only describe as a sonic nuke going off. If aliens heard ‘Contact’, they might think humans are trying to incite a war. With how well this collaboration came out to be, fans can only hope that these two exceedingly talented artists will decide to work together again in the future.
