20syl is a veritable swiss army knife amongst artists, being a French rapper, composer and MC in the group Hocus Pocus, member of the beatmaker collective C2C, half of the hip-hop and electronic duo AllttA, and part of a four-time world champion DMC team. Accolades aside, he has also been the mastermind behind arguably some of the most vibrant and stylistic downtempo productions in the past decade. One of the best examples of this is his original track titled ‘Kodama’.
Birthed from the beautiful mind of 20syl in the summer of 2014, ‘Kodama’ is a scrumptious audible infusion of hip-hip and electro-swing elements that come together into something really quite remarkable. The layering of piano, punchy but not overpowering kicks, vocal sprinkles, and airy sections come together into a track that is equal parts dancey, emotional, and reflective. Kodama seems to have a very special energy to it, as even to this day it makes the hairs on my arms stand at attention and electricity shoot through my limbs. This is one of those pieces that you can groove to with a goofy grin on your face, or just sit and reflect as you let the sounds wash over you. However you choose to use this track to your liking, I can guarantee that you’ll feel something.
I highly recommend checking out the rest of 20syl’s impressive library, but to begin your deep dive make sure to start with ‘Kodama’ below!
