ION Injects Hip Hop into Experimental Bass in ‘Hopped Out’

by Tony Leonard

An ion is an atom or molecule that has a different number of electrons than protons, so it has a charge. It is also the name of one of the spiciest underground bass producers out right now. California native Jimmy Mosqueda, aka ION, started producing music in 2012. Connecting universal frequencies with musical composition it is easy to get lost in his sounds much like going on a guided meditation journey. He is influenced most by his everyday surroundings and the society in which we live in today. Finding inspiration in everything speaks volumes of the character you portray, and ION is nothing short of inspirational himself. Having releases on More Creativity Records, The Untz, [SUS] Collective and more, he is quickly leaving an imprint on the west coast bass scene. In attempts to find a median between hip hop and experimental bass music, ‘Hopped Out’ is the latest track unveiled from Mosqueda.

In response to being asked about the intention of ‘Hopped Out’ he says, “The idea behind my latest release was just to showcase my hip hop roots and also show my latest experimental bass sound design, blending them together to create that dark trappy urban alienated ION vibe.” Such a perfect description of the purpose to this track. Taking classic Soulja Boy samples from ‘Turn My Swag On,’ ION creates a master sound wave for the lyrics to ride over. It proves to be the ideal mixture of thick trap and dark, experimental synths. For the remainder of 2019 he has a huge amount of new music planned to be released, as well as some potential big name label releases. Lover of all things science, and observationalist of the world we live in, ION is taking over this year. Listen to ‘Hopped Up’ below and grab that free download on SoundCloud.
