Holly’s ‘Avenal 2500’ EP Perpetuates Diversity

by A. Samuel Lewis

Portugal’s Holly may be the most technically apt and creatively impelled producers of the modern generation. Releasing roughly 800 tracks between 2016 and 2017, Holly has compiled a nearly unfathomable index of collaborations ranging from underground experimental moguls such as Gangus and MAERE to established veterans such as Breaux and Slippy before rounding off the year taking 1st place in A-Trak’s 2017 Beat Battle in Brooklyn, New York.

I decided to take a break from the constant stream of releases so I can focus on the next step in my music journey and I’m excited to be back again sharing music with all of you”, Holly shares with fans on social media before teasing the first single from his new Deadbeats EP, ‘Encontrar’ with Slow J.

Avenal 2500 presents a diverse soundscape that enigmatically personifies Holly’s creative dexterity and innovative diversity. In reverence of his native roots, subtle flute melodies and rhythmic percussion are woven within the velvety Portuguese sonata of ‘Encontrar’ as the vocal dialogue unravels the emotional journey endured through his music pilgrimage. An unnerving otherworldly riser provides an audible disparity in cadence as ‘Skeleton Beach’ unfolds into an exhilarating crusade of metallic jabs and precipitous surges of bass. The project concludes in remarkable fashion as an irreproachable bassline and cleanly delivered vocals in ‘Foreign’ lead effortlessly into the entrancing electro-funk build of ‘Reflector, which quickly rears toward uncharted territory as Holly & experimental mastermind LITTLE SNAKE concoct a staggering freeform salutation.
