msft. Breathes New Life Into Ekali’s ‘Crystal Eyes’

by Steph Contant

Ekali‘s Crystal Eyes EP was one of last year’s most versatile and innovative projects. So, who better to flip the project’s title track from a soothing ballad into a gritty bass banger than msft., one of our favourite break-out acts in recent months. From remixing greats such as Louis the Child officially, to TroyBoi unofficially, to even editing BROCKHAMPTON’s ‘STAR’ yet (unfortunately) never releasing it, the Italian beat-making prodigy is quickly climbing the ranks as one of the best.

In his latest undertaking, msft. flexes a new-found adaptability by merging his quintessential trap signature with a twist of drum & bass. Only the introduction and break between drops is recognizable as the original ‘Crystal Eyes,’ as the talented producer adds his distinct, wonky synths and hard-hitting percussion to transport listeners to the depths of an eerie cave with no signs of life in sight. Conversely, the second drop is like finding the light at the end of the tunnel, as msft. provides a breathe of fresh soundscapes in an unusual yet flawlessly executed drum & bass portion, all without sounding disjointed from the initial half of the track.

Don’t sleep on msft.’s remix of ‘Crystal Eyes’ below!
