PREMIERE: Subtronics Furthers His Dubstep Flair In ‘They Call Me’

by Steph Contant

Subtronics is a man of the people. As one of the most active artists in his respective Facebook fan page known as the Cyclops Army, there’s no denying his undying love for his supporters. Today, the talented producer pays homage to his loyal fans by naming his new project, the Cyclops Army EP, after them. “The track ‘Cyclops Army’ exists because I put a sample that says “cyclops… army… BRING IT” in and I realized it would make a great title. I also wanted to honour my incredible fan group by naming my biggest release after them,” Subtronics states about his newest work.

Having released three distinctly heavy four-track EPs in the span of four months early last year, Subtronics has been busy rebuilding his repertoire of unreleased tracks to unleash to the masses in recent months. With many of these being teased in his ‘Now That’s What I Call Riddim Vol. 4’ mix, anticipation has only grown towards the release of his next massive project, but fans can now breathe a sigh of relief.

Today, we are ecstatic to premiere the one and only track that wasn’t teased in ‘NTWICR Vol. 4,’ ‘They Call Me.’ When asked about this track, Subtronics elaborates, “I made ‘They Call Me’ on my Up In Smoke US tour. We stopped in Philly halfway through and I wanted to show Michael (Blunts & Blondes) some Ableton tricks and what not. I ended up using a Detroit techno stab sample in the noise oscillator in serum, and got super carried away showing him various weird tricks. All of a sudden, I put drums and pitch bend in just dicking around and BAM, major eureka moment, holy fucking shit this song might turn out crazy. And it did. It’s my personal favourite on there too, and I think it’s the strongest song of mine out of my newer releases. I also take a bit of pride with it’s uniqueness in today’s age of cycled quarter notes.”

Crazy it is. ‘They Call Me’ features all of the monstrous sound design fans have grown to love from Subtronics, all while boasting a unique touch that truly makes it stand out from the rest of the Cyclops Army EP. From his typical vocal chops to his wonky wobbles, and not to mention the ridiculous flow between very distinct-sounding synths and stabs, Subtronics has truly created a beast in his latest.
