Simply put, Akeos is bass music’s most promising emerging star. The appearance of ‘Bukiyou‘ on my SoundCloud feed a few months back had me falling out of my chair in awe, and a quick dig into the Akeos’ profile revealed a multi-talented artist capable of producing just about every genre with a quality only matched by the greats. I’ve been a huge Akeos fanboy ever since, steadily watching their follower count rise almost astronomically on all social media platforms.
The announcement of Akeos’ debut project on Never Say Die: Black Label late last week came as no surprise, as recent clips of heavy, gut-wrenching dubstep tracks showed signs of a perfect fit to the notorious imprint. And, with two of the clips coming as full songs on the four-track Labyrinth EP, namely ‘Tripolar Dub’ and ‘Duel,’ it’s safe to say that Akeos has found the perfect home for their sinister concoctions.
The full version of ‘Tripolar Dub’ was the first track to come to light on SoundCloud earlier this week, and it might be the most accurate representation of Akeos’ gritty signature. A short yet punchy introduction captivates your attention, before you are bombarded with a gnarly mixdown of repetitive, jagged synths that never let up. ‘Friction’ and ‘Labyrinth’ follow and are but further flexes of relentless bass and insanely meticulous sound design. ‘Duel’ alongside Jub caps off the epic project just as heavy as it starts, with a two minute-long first drop and previously unheard second drop that might just melt your face off.
Akeos is the future. The Labyrinth EP is proof. Don’t sleep.
