Maryland-based experimental bass aficionado Gurf has been on a steady tear of Earth-shattering collaborations over the last couple of months. Everything from his work with bd hbt to XTALS has been as forward-thinking as it can get, and he shows no signs of slowing down any time soon. Conversely, Alabama-based SNAK PAK, who has previously collaborated with sfam and XTALS, has not been releasing as steadily as Gurf, but never ceases to show growth and innovation in his works. Today, we’re ecstatic to premiere Gurf and SNAK PAK’s first joint work titled ‘Bust Em’ which is nothing short of exceptional.
Collaborating remotely can sometimes be a challenge, but the two artists clicked immediately on ‘Bust Em.’ Regarding the process, SNAK PAK states, “this song came together super fast! Probably the fastest one I have ever done, talk about the art of flow! I had a rough idea one day as the first drop, sent him what I had so far, and he nailed the rest! I really love his switch up in the second drop towards the end, it’s brutal!“
An almost melancholic bassline in the introduction sets the stage for the heater that follows, as added percussion gives the track a misleading upbeat feel. The soothing initiation to ‘Bust Em’ is quickly met by a crisp vocal sample that flips the track from a dream-like state to raw bass insanity. However, the stark contrast between the two sections never sounds disjointed or out of place, which is a true testament to both Gurf and SNAK PAK’s natural talents. “Total experimentation led us to make this track and surprisingly, nothing about this song was complicated or complex. We didn’t even spend an entire week on this. We both just kept open minds the entire time and had fun,” SNAK PAK adds about the work flow behind ‘Bust Em.’ Fans of wonky bass, meticulous drums and gnarly flow are in for a real treat with this one, and the second drop is sure to have you falling out of your chair.
