PREMIERE: Womp Rat & Concentrate Synthesize Obscurity in ‘Chungus’

by A. Samuel Lewis

Weaving off-kilter parables through avant-garde sound design, Bay Area’s Womp Rat specializes in experimental basslines and wobbly mixdowns, working cohesively within the thriving bass music scene in California, which has allowed him to unearth synergistic relationships that have further refined and cultured his style and led to collaborative efforts such as the Split Vision EP alongside Concentrate and Oakland-based Phers.

Plunging deeper into the depths of Womp Rat’s collaborative arsenal lurks an insistent ominous melody, “When Concentrate and I get together we like to provoke each other into escalated bouts of dry humor, the devious nature of our humor is most likely responsible for the inception of this melody,” he shares regarding the insatiable dark melody that haunts the introductory track of his forthcoming EP. The melody bubbles and broods kept rigidly in check with precise percussion and a variety of digital and truculent fills.

‘Chungus’ is what Womp Rat is all about. It captures the feeling that I get while performing, and it really is a fun track to spin out. The EP is about entering the realm of Grimoire and I wanted this song to grab the listener’s hand and take them through the portal into this world that I have created.
