West Coast bass producer jordnmoody has been a FUXWITHIT favourite for a minute. His experimental bass excellence infuses elements of trap and hip hop with insane sound design and thrilling samples. With multiple premieres on our site, it’s no surprise that we’d eventually link with the producer for a guest mix and interview. The day has finally come and jordnmoody did not disappoint. The 45 minute mix is a testament to his talents including a grip of unreleased heaters and a few bangers from his artist homies. Bump the mix below and be sure to check out the interview. We spoke to him about how he got into creating experimental music, finding a balance in his work, and what’s next.
How’s San Diego treating you? Are you born and raised there?
I love it. I was actually born and raised in Indianapolis, IN. I’ve been grounded here in San Diego for the past 3+ years.
Tell us a little bit about the mix. Where are you taking listeners with this one?
With this mix, I really wanted to highlight the talent of the underground, as well as a lot of music I’m currently working on. There are so many talented producers with less than like 5K followers making incredibly dope shit. S/o to ujuu, midnght, yates, and EZPZ especially for sending in fire IDs for the mix. Some of them are homies I know personally, some I’m merely just inspired by. Regardless, I think it’s important to take notice of the fact that things like follower count & notoriety aren’t necessarily requirements or indicators of producers making dope shit.
I felt that electronic music was getting a little stale at the time and simply wanted to make shit that sounded like nothing else at the moment. Something fresh…
What got you into creating experimental music?
I got into experimental music around 3 years ago, around the same time I moved to SD. I felt that electronic music was getting a little stale at the time and simply wanted to make shit that sounded like nothing else at the moment. Something fresh. I think it’s grown a bit of a following since then but I think by definition experimental music should always be forward thinking, with zero boundaries.
How do you balance experimentation with making tracks digestible for listeners?
Haha good question. It’s definitely not always for the simple minded. But, I think by maintaining a steady groove and clever sampling allows for it to be digestible by all types of electronic music fans.
What do you enjoy most about creating music?
The thrill of creating something from nothing.
there will probably always be some hint of hip hop in a majority of my productions/mixes
Your music seems to have a rap influence in a lot of your music. Can you tell us a little bit about your relationship with the genre?
I grew up on all types of music, but hip hop was definitely one of the more stronger influences. Like many other producers, I started making hip hop beats for rappers. I still do to this day as well. So there will probably always be some hint of hip hop in a majority of my productions/mixes.
What do like to do when you’re not making music?
I do a lot of photo & video work outside of making music. I’ve also been getting into a lot of animation type work recently as well. After effects is such a beast of program.
What are you most looking forward to for the remainder of the year?
Shows! Excited to finally start playing out more regularly. I’ve got some coming up soon all in SoCal.
